On Friday, they stood at National Match Day, arms around each other, waiting to learn where Fernandez would do her residency training.

Maria Luisa de Curtis Fernandez kissed her daughter 鶹Ʒ Ss head as Jessica opened her envelope and learned she 鶹Ʒ Sd gotten her top choice 鶹Ʒ S Jefferson Medical College 鶹Ʒ Ss duPoint Children 鶹Ʒ Ss Hospital in Philadelphia. It 鶹Ʒ Ss one of only three pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation positions in the country that train doctors to care for children with movement disorders caused by conditions such as traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and Jessica 鶹Ʒ Ss condition, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. The rare genetic disorder affects bone growth and causes small stature. Jessica stands 4 feet 2 inches tall.

DuPont was the hospital program where Fernandez had surgery last year to fuse bones in her spine. She 鶹Ʒ Sd fallen in love with the facility 鶹Ʒ Ss spirit and that bond intensified when Fernandez did a rotation at the hospital months later.

鶹Ʒ SThey were so motivating and accepting, 鶹Ʒ S she said. 鶹Ʒ SThey wanted me to be me. With them, I can help children gain independence and mobility. I can heal patients like me. 鶹Ʒ S

Fernandez was one of 114 Class of 2018 UCF medical students who matched into residencies Friday. Across the country a record-high 37,103 applicants submitted choices for 33,167 residency positions, the most ever offered. UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss 98 percent match rate was again higher than the national average of 94.3 percent. During their fourth year of medical school, students interview with residency programs in their specialty of choice. They rank their choices; residency programs do the same. Then a national computer matches the two. The results are kept secret until noon on National Match Day, when students nationwide learn the results.

2018 UCF graduates will do their residencies at top hospitals across the nation, state and community, including Georgetown, Harvard, Johns Hopkins All Children 鶹Ʒ Ss Hospital in St. Petersburg, Mayo Clinic, Orlando Health, University of Florida, Vanderbilt and Yale.

Ion, the College of Medicine 鶹Ʒ Ss certified therapy dog, even received his next assignment on Match Day. Ion 鶹Ʒ Ss owner, Christa Zino, matched into a surgical residency at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Her residency program director said Ion, a rescued boxer, can join residents on surgical rounds to provide comfort to patients. 鶹Ʒ SI 鶹Ʒ Sm so excited, 鶹Ʒ S Zino said. 鶹Ʒ SI love surgery because I can fix things with my hands. I can be that person. Now I just need to find a full-time dog walker. 鶹Ʒ S

Professor Roseann White, who teaches at the medical school 鶹Ʒ Ss Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, attended Match Day to cheer on her neighbor 鶹Ʒ Ss grandson and former student, UCF med student Tyler Hall. He graduated from Burnett and is now headed to a pediatric residency at the University of Chicago. Hall credited Burnett School faculty with advising and helping him be ready for medical school and then succeed to he could get his dream residency.

White was equally thrilled. 鶹Ʒ STo see him grow up and embark on his journey to become a pediatrician was very special, 鶹Ʒ S she said. 鶹Ʒ SFor Tyler, along with a few others, to be one of our UCF biomedical sciences graduates matching makes me proud of our program. 鶹Ʒ S

Best friends Stephen Rineer and Richard Taylor both matched into pediatric residencies at Cincinnati Children 鶹Ʒ Ss Hospital. They met during their first year of med school. They studied together, prepared for their board exams together. Their wives are now best friends too.

鶹Ʒ SWe were competitive but in a good way, 鶹Ʒ S Reiner said. Added Taylor: 鶹Ʒ SI 鶹Ʒ Sm ecstatic. It means so much to be able to match with my best friend, because we get to move there and already have a family of friends. 鶹Ʒ S

Kyle Cox spent his undergraduate years competing on UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss soccer team while he was studying biomedical sciences for pre-med. In May, he 鶹Ʒ Sll graduate and move with his wife to Montgomery, AL, for a residency in orthopedic surgery at University of South Alabama Hospitals.

鶹Ʒ SI 鶹Ʒ Sve spent so many years in athletics, I think like an athlete and I think that will help me relate to my patients, 鶹Ʒ S he said. 鶹Ʒ SOrthopedic surgery will allow me to help athletes get back on the field and help patients gain mobility so they can get back to what they enjoy. 鶹Ʒ S

After opening their envelopes on the College of Medicine 鶹Ʒ Ss Tavistock Green, the future physicians went to a microphone, announced where they matched and placed a thumbtack on a giant U.S. map to mark their residency destination. Dean Deborah German told students that when they opened their envelopes, they were 鶹Ʒ Sopening the door to your future. 鶹Ʒ S

Jessica Fernandez was the second student to announce her future. She stood on a stool to see over the podium at a Match Day crowd of hundreds.

鶹Ʒ SI 鶹Ʒ Sm Jess, 鶹Ʒ S she said. Then the future Dr. Jessica Fernandez announced where she will go to heal others. And the crowd roared.

Student Research: Death Proteins to Enzyme Therapy /news/death-proteins-to-enzyme-therapy-student-researchers-present-findings/ /news/death-proteins-to-enzyme-therapy-student-researchers-present-findings/#comments Wed, 25 Aug 2010 14:48:20 +0000 /news/?p=15265 The afternoon-long event also featured a presentation on cell division by Dr. Yixian Zheng, from the Carnegie Institute for Science at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Baltimore.

With the new enrollment, the Burnett school now has 119 students in its graduate program.

鶹Ʒ S 鶹Ʒ SIt was so exciting to see the medical school auditorium filled today with graduate students and faculty, 鶹Ʒ S said Dr. Roseann White, associate director of the Burnett school, said as she mingled through the research posters and talked to the students.

Ph.D. student Rebecca Boohaker presented a poster on a 鶹Ʒ Sdeath protein 鶹Ʒ S which she said has the vital 鶹Ʒ Sday job 鶹Ʒ S of maintaining energy levels in cells. But at some point, the cell creates a 鶹Ʒ Sdeath signal 鶹Ʒ S that causes cells to perish. Rebecca 鶹Ʒ Ss research is aimed at using that 鶹Ʒ Sdeath signal 鶹Ʒ S to wipe out cancer cells. Such targeting would allow doctors to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells that are often destroyed during chemotherapy treatments. Rebecca started working in a research labs when she as 16 and said, 鶹Ʒ SI never looked back. I love solving puzzles. 鶹Ʒ S

Alex Fagenson is getting the opportunity to conduct scientific research as an underclassman in the Burnett school and said he hopes to use his experience as a transplant surgeon. 鶹Ʒ SI want to be the kind of doctor who knows this stuff because he 鶹Ʒ Ss been in a lab, rather than just memorizing it out of a book, 鶹Ʒ S he said. Alex 鶹Ʒ Ss research focuses on the 鶹Ʒ STopo 11 鶹Ʒ S enzyme in DNA that allows cells and their chromosomes to divide and multiply. The enzyme is more active in cancer cells and by de-activating it, scientists may find a way to keep cancer cells from multiplying.

Ph.D. student David Paladino is looking at ways to treat pancreatic cancer, one of the most lethal forms of cancer with a five-year mortality rate of 95 percent. David 鶹Ʒ Ss research is looking at how cancer cells do not seem affected by the normal checks and balances that control other cells in the body. Cancer cells, he said, 鶹Ʒ Shijack 鶹Ʒ S pathways in the body that allow them to grow and spread. The goal of his research is to try to block those pathways. David says he loves scientific research because it allows him to explore new areas and approaches and to create his own knowledge. 鶹Ʒ SYeah, I guess you could say I 鶹Ʒ Sm a laboratory adventurer, 鶹Ʒ S he said.
