Christian Spencer  鶹Ʒ S23  鶹Ʒ S26MS is pursuing his dream career, blending the art of world-class hospitality with the innovation of themed entertainment here in Central Florida, the theme park capital of the world.

Last year, Spencer was promoted to his first leadership role as a performance coordinator with the Entertainment Events team at Universal Orlando Resort  鶹Ʒ S guiding performers, maintaining show quality, and collaborating with creative and technical teams to deliver live events and immersive guest experiences. He credits UCF with helping him achieve a decades-long goal.

That dream started during his childhood in Virginia, when his parents went through a difficult divorce, and he found his happy place at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. He went on to become a theater student, and in high school he took a job at the park as a performer.

That 鶹Ʒ Ss when he knew he could turn his passion into a career.

鶹Ʒ SAs a kid, I could immerse myself in a show and have a reprieve from difficult times at home. I knew that someday I wanted to create that happiness for others, 鶹Ʒ S Spencer says. 鶹Ʒ SOnce I had the opportunity to work there, I was fascinated by what it took behind the scenes to bring a theme park experience to life. I wanted a career filled with days like those. 鶹Ʒ S

To pursue this path, he set his sights on attending , where he went on to earn his bachelor 鶹Ʒ Ss degree in entertainment management in 2023. Just this week, UCF welcomed  as its first entertainment-sector Pegasus Partner and announced the creation of The Universal School of Experience Leadership and Innovation at Rosen College.

鶹Ʒ SWhen I found Rosen College, I knew it was the place for me, 鶹Ʒ S he says.  鶹Ʒ SOn the first day of class, my professor talked about the joys of a career in the theme park industry. It was a dream I 鶹Ʒ Sd had for so long that it moved me to tears. 鶹Ʒ S

He sent his mom a text that said,  鶹Ʒ SThank you for everything you 鶹Ʒ Sve done for me. I 鶹Ʒ Sm exactly where I need to be. 鶹Ʒ S

However, as an out-of-state student, tuition was a challenge for Spencer. His mom did all she could to help him, but he has worked hard to pay for his education. He became a resident assistant on campus and also received a Rosen College scholarship. Throughout school, he has worked as a performer in all three major Central Florida theme parks simultaneously.

He also became a leader on campus and in the industry, serving as vice president of 鶹Ʒ Ss Future Theme Park Leaders Association while he was a Rosen College student.

He credits his professors with believing in him and supporting him throughout his journey, helping him to work toward his goal of becoming a show director in one of the local world-class theme parks.

The same professor who inspired him on day one later encouraged him to pursue a master 鶹Ʒ Ss degree in themed experience, part of  鶹Ʒ Ss College of Arts and Humanities. This program is designed for the next generation of creators, artists and leaders who are redefining what it means to be entertained, and Spencer just graduated in early May.

鶹Ʒ SMy UCF journey has been the experience of a lifetime, 鶹Ʒ S he says.  鶹Ʒ SAnd the best part is that I 鶹Ʒ Sll spend my career creating experiences that are just as life-changing for others. 鶹Ʒ S

Last year, Spencer received a Universal Orlando Impact Award recognizing his contributions to the grand opening celebration of Epic Universe, the resort 鶹Ʒ Ss newest theme park.

, inspiring the UCF community and demonstrating the power of a Knight education to reshape what it means to be entertained and what the future of experiences holds for people everywhere.

The UCF-Universal Pegasus Partnership is a significant early milestone of   鶹Ʒ S a $3.5 billion campaign to expand opportunity, advance discovery and drive impact across the university.

Spencer 鶹Ʒ Ss story shows why  is so important: Investments in UCF help students ignite meaningful careers, discover new frontiers and create a bold tomorrow. Students like him are launching a new era of innovation and making their mark across every industry.

ome to UCF, Orlando has long been a global center for themed entertainment. As immersive attractions, museums and themed entertainment experiences continue to grow in scale, complexity and cultural impact, the industry faces a critical challenge: preparing the next generation of professionals with the real-world skills needed to bring immersive experiences to life.

Spanning storytelling, architecture, engineering, media, operations and production, today 鶹Ʒ Ss themed experiences and attractions demand skills that rarely live within a single academic discipline.

For many aspiring professionals, the pathway into themed entertainment remains unclear, with limited visibility into professional workflows, real-world timelines and the cross-functional dynamics that ultimately determine a project 鶹Ʒ Ss success.

A new partnership between UCF and AOA 鶹Ʒ S a leading immersive experience design, production and project management company 鶹Ʒ S aims to change that to better support the future of the industry.

Ideal Partnership

鶹Ʒ Ss themed experience graduate programs at the College of Arts and Humanities and AOA have launched the AOA Scholars Program, a hands-on practicum designed to give graduate students direct exposure to the real-world processes behind themed entertainment design and production.

UCF introduced a theatre Master of Fine Arts track in themed experience in 2018. In 2021, the university offered a stand-alone degree program in themed experience. Both programs are  the first of its kind at a public university.

The program 鶹Ʒ Ss focused curriculum in themed experience and attractions makes it an ideal partner for AOA.

The scholars initiative will address a common challenge in the field: while demand for immersive attractions, museums and experiences continues to grow, there is an expanding need for practical training and field work for emerging talent.

鶹Ʒ SFlorida is home to some of the most sophisticated themed entertainment work in the world, but the way people enter the industry hasn 鶹Ʒ St kept pace, 鶹Ʒ S says Tom Acomb, co-founder and chief creative officer of AOA. 鶹Ʒ SThis program is about opening the door earlier and giving students a clearer view of how these projects actually come together. 鶹Ʒ S

Each semester, a select cohort of students will participate in workshops led by AOA professionals, visit active project sites and production facilities, and learn how creative, technical and operational decisions intersect in real projects.

鶹Ʒ SAOA has always believed in investing in early-career talent, starting with a strong internship program that 鶹Ʒ Ss been part of our culture since the early days, 鶹Ʒ S says Mike Ostendorf, co-founder and CEO of AOA. 鶹Ʒ SThis partnership with UCF is an evolution of that long-standing commitment 鶹Ʒ S because seeing the full lifecycle of a project up close matters. 鶹Ʒ S

What 鶹Ʒ Ss Next

UCF will oversee academic structure and accreditation, while AOA will contribute funding and industry expertise.

鶹Ʒ SThis partnership gives students access to professional workflows with one of the top firms in the themed entertainment industry with diverse project and a global reach 鶹Ʒ S says Peter Weishar, director of themed experience at UCF. 鶹Ʒ SIt strengthens Florida 鶹Ʒ Ss role as a global talent pipeline for themed entertainment. 鶹Ʒ S

The AOA Scholars Program is expected to begin Fall 2026, reinforcing Central Florida 鶹Ʒ Ss position as a training ground for the next generation of immersive experience professionals.

UCF Alum, Theme Park Expert Returns to Enhance Themed Experience Education /news/ucf-alum-theme-park-expert-returns-to-enhance-themed-experience-education/ Mon, 01 Dec 2025 15:37:44 +0000 /news/?p=150053 With credits at Disney and Universal on his resume, Jason Surrell 鶹Ʒ S95 is helping educate the next generation of theme experience leaders.

]]>
Jason Surrell 鶹Ʒ S95 has spent decades shaping the stories behind some of the world 鶹Ʒ Ss most iconic theme park attractions. His credits include the Thea Award-winning Jurassic World Adventure, Halloween Horror Nights and Universal Epic Universe. He 鶹Ʒ Ss also contributed to Walt Disney World Resort 鶹Ʒ Ss Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor and enhancements to the Haunted Mansion. Now, the interdisciplinary studies alum returned to UCF to share his storytelling expertise with students in the themed experience program.

We sat down with Surrell to talk about what storytelling means today 鶹Ʒ S not just for theme parks, but for anyone looking to make an impact. Here are five insights he believes every student should know.

1. Storytelling Is a Universal Skill

Whether you’re designing a ride, writing a research paper or helping a patient, storytelling matters. It is how we connect, communicate and create meaning.

鶹Ʒ SRegardless of your discipline …  we’re all storytellers, 鶹Ʒ S Surrell says. And it is particularly important in today 鶹Ʒ Ss entertainment options: 鶹Ʒ SThe thing that separates theme parks from amusement parks is stories. 鶹Ʒ S

He encourages students to understand classic story structures, like the hero 鶹Ʒ Ss journey, because they help us make sense of life.

鶹Ʒ SI 鶹Ʒ Sve mapped my own personal and professional life to the hero 鶹Ʒ Ss journey 鶹Ʒ S and I 鶹Ʒ Sll be damned if it doesn 鶹Ʒ St work, 鶹Ʒ S he says.

2. Curiosity Is Your Superpower

Surrell believes curiosity is essential, not just for creatives but for anyone who wants to innovate.

鶹Ʒ SYou need to be a student of life. You need to be curious about everything, because you never know what’s going to come into play in this field. 鶹Ʒ S

While working on Disney 鶹Ʒ Ss Pal Mickey, Surrell had to learn about unfamiliar subjects to write dialogue for the interactive toy. It was a challenge that pushed him outside his comfort zone and led to the creation of a toy that entertained and educated guests at the parks, including Animal Kingdom.

鶹Ʒ SAll of a sudden I’m a zoologist  … literally having to learn about ring-tailed lemurs, 鶹Ʒ S he says.

3. Comfort, Reassurance and Escape Are Human Needs

Theme parks aren 鶹Ʒ St just entertainment 鶹Ʒ S they 鶹Ʒ Sre emotional experiences. Nostalgia plays a big role in this, especially in places like Disney 鶹Ʒ Ss Magic Kingdom, Surrell says.

鶹Ʒ SThere 鶹Ʒ Ss something inherently reassuring about going to a place that … remains the way you remembered it as a kid, 鶹Ʒ S he says.

He sees themed entertainment as a noble pursuit, one that supports mental and emotional well-being, which became very apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic.

鶹Ʒ STheme parks are explicit about it, 鶹Ʒ S he says. 鶹Ʒ SIt’s comfort, reassurance and escape. There really is no more noble pursuit than to provide that for people. Our central product really is emotion. 鶹Ʒ S

4. Be Ready to Pivot

Surrell 鶹Ʒ Ss career path 鶹Ʒ S from performer to Imagineer to professor 鶹Ʒ S shows the power of flexibility.

鶹Ʒ SYou have to be ready to pivot and adapt to whatever life in the industry throws at you. 鶹Ʒ S

He shares how a mentor once advised him to gain more experience before applying to Disney. That advice led him to Universal, and eventually back to Disney.

鶹Ʒ SFive years later, a job opened up … That was a deviation from the path I thought I was on. 鶹Ʒ S

Students should be prepared to adapt, take risks, and embrace opportunities outside their original plans.

5. Themed Experience Is a Growth Industry

The themed entertainment industry is booming, and that extends beyond the opening of  Epic Universe and Disney 鶹Ʒ Ss expansions. Themed experience can be found everywhere now, including restaurants, hotels, libraries, cruise ships, hospitals, museums and retail. Surrell sees UCF as the ideal place to study this field.

鶹Ʒ SIt only makes sense. We 鶹Ʒ Sre in the theme park capital of the world … the go-to place for themed experience, 鶹Ʒ S he says.

He compares 鶹Ʒ Ss program to film schools in the 1960s 鶹Ʒ S a launchpad for a new generation of storytellers.

鶹Ʒ SThis program offers young people a very clear and legitimate pathway into the industry. 鶹Ʒ S

Surrell 鶹Ʒ Ss message to students is clear: Be curious, be adaptable and embrace storytelling 鶹Ʒ S no matter your field.

鶹Ʒ SCharge forth now because you have everything on your side, 鶹Ʒ S he says. 鶹Ʒ SBe fearless, be courageous and go for it. 鶹Ʒ S
