]]>

For 25 years, members of have shared a powerful belief: investing in UCF is ultimately an investment in students and the lives they 鶹Ʒ Sll lead.

Through planned gifts such as bequests, estate plans and retirement assets, society members extend opportunity far beyond a single generation. Their support fuels scholarships, research and academic programs that prepare students to meet the evolving needs of industry and community.

In 2025 alone, planned gifts accounted for nearly one-third of all charitable support to UCF.

The society is named for UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss founding president, Charles Millican, a visionary who built the university with the future firmly in mind. During his tenure, Millican transformed 1,227 acres of Central Florida scrubland into an institution designed to support the space race and prepare students for careers in engineering and computer science. He championed what would become the Central Florida Research Park and helped shape UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss enduring ambition to reach for the stars.

Today, that vision lives on through more than 500 members of The Charles Millican Legacy Society 鶹Ʒ S and through the students whose futures are shaped by their generosity.

A World of Possibility

Thiago Maillo 鶹Ʒ Ss path to a bachelor 鶹Ʒ Ss degree wasn 鶹Ʒ St linear 鶹Ʒ S but it was driven by something unwavering: the pursuit of greater opportunity.

After his first year studying medicine at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Maillo realized he wanted a different future. He saw higher education in the United States as the place to build it. Just three months after applying to Valencia College, he moved to Florida and later .

“Scholarships have made all the difference. They 鶹Ʒ Sve made it possible for me to achieve my dreams.” 鶹Ʒ S Thiago Maillo, biomedical sciences major

Today, he 鶹Ʒ Ss a Burnett Honors Scholar and biomedical sciences major on the neuroscience track, with a minor in psychology. He 鶹Ʒ Ss conducted research at the Applied Cognition and Technology Lab, completed an internship with ThinkNeuro and serves as an undergraduate teaching assistant in Genetics and Embryology. He 鶹Ʒ Ss also found community as president of the Argentinian Student Association.

鶹Ʒ SBeing at UCF was my goal from the start, 鶹Ʒ S says Maillo, who plans to pursue a doctoral degree in cognitive neuroscience. 鶹Ʒ SI love being a Knight. Scholarships have made all the difference. They 鶹Ʒ Sve made it possible for me to achieve my dreams 鶹Ʒ S and pave the way for my two siblings to follow in my footsteps. 鶹Ʒ S

Reimagining What 鶹Ʒ Ss Possible

Shannon Hankinson didn 鶹Ʒ St follow the traditional path to UCF 鶹Ʒ S she created her own.

A Tampa native and single mother of two, Hankinson spent years leading teams at Target before realizing that success and fulfillment aren 鶹Ʒ St always the same. Determined to change course, she saved money, left her job, earned an associate degree at Eastern Florida State College and transferred to UCF, becoming the first in her family to pursue a four-year degree.

“Donors made it possible for me to build a future that reflects my values and supports my family.” 鶹Ʒ S Shannon Hankinson, electrical engineering major

Now a senior electrical engineering major, she has seized several opportunities at UCF. She completed two semesters in the , joined the Society of Women Engineers and works as a research assistant in UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss Radiation Effects Exploration Laboratory. There, she studies semiconductor reliability, hardware design and embedded systems under Assistant Professor Enxia Zhang. Through the Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement program, she also gained hands-on experience with the U.S. defense sector.

This spring, Hankinson will graduate debt-free 鶹Ʒ S supported by scholarships, research funding and a fellowship that 鶹Ʒ Sll carry her directly into a UCF master 鶹Ʒ Ss program. A doctorate is next.

鶹Ʒ SOne of my goals was to show my children that it 鶹Ʒ Ss never too late to do what you want to do with your life, 鶹Ʒ S Hankinson says. 鶹Ʒ SDonors made it possible for me to build a future that reflects my values and supports my family. 鶹Ʒ S

A Lasting Legacy

On May 2, UCF celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Charles Millican Legacy Society. The milestone coincides with , which builds on the university 鶹Ʒ Ss commitment to accelerating student success, advancing research and driving societal impact.

“… support from … our Charles Millican Legacy Society members [continues] to power our innovators, educators and researchers …” 鶹Ʒ S Rod Grabowski, senior vice president of Advancement and Partnerships

鶹Ʒ SThis university was founded to serve the next great frontier 鶹Ʒ S America 鶹Ʒ Ss space race 鶹Ʒ S and it 鶹Ʒ Ss support from dedicated individuals like our Charles Millican Legacy Society members that continue to power our innovators, educators and researchers as they move that mission forward, 鶹Ʒ S says Rod Grabowski, senior vice president of Advancement and Partnerships and CEO of the UCF Foundation. 鶹Ʒ SFrom driving the latest advances in AI to creating next-level immersive experiences and sparking breakthrough medical research, UCF is building a future others have only imagined 鶹Ʒ S one that this society 鶹Ʒ Ss namesake would be proud to see. 鶹Ʒ S

Maillo is forging new frontiers for his family. Hankinson is showing her children what 鶹Ʒ Ss possible when you start again.

They aren 鶹Ʒ St outliers. They 鶹Ʒ Sre what happens when students with extraordinary drive meet extraordinary support.

This is the true legacy of UCF, of Millican and of the society members: students with the confidence to go further, supported by those who believe they can.

Founders’ Day 2026: Employee Excellence, Years of Service Awards /news/founders-day-2026-employee-awards/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 16:22:12 +0000 /news/?p=151962 The annual event spotlights nearly 600 staff members for their commitment, dedication and relentless work that powers UCF everyday.

]]>
UCF honored approximately 580 staff members on Founders 鶹Ʒ S Day, our annual celebration of employees, faculty and students who fuel UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss excellence and impact.

The university recognized employees who reached milestone years of service, along with those recently retired or about to be. UCF also presented a Champion of Student Success and Well-Being Award and excellence awards in recognition of employees who made exceptional contributions to benefit the campus community.

鶹Ʒ SWe celebrate your service, your dedication, and the impact you make across this university. But behind that recognition is something even more powerful: the daily commitment, the steady work, and the consistency that build momentum over time, 鶹Ʒ S says UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright. 鶹Ʒ SThe future we talk about at UCF is not something that begins someday. It is already taking shape in the work you do, in the systems you support, and in the experiences you create for our students. Thank you. 鶹Ʒ S

UCF this year brought a new category of Employee Leadership Excellence Awards, recognizing non-faculty administrative leadership at the director level and above. They joined the expanded Employee Excellence Awards, which highlighted the remarkable contributions of full-time employees up to an associate director level.

The employee event kicked off a Founders 鶹Ʒ S Day celebration that also included faculty and student celebrations. Combined, more than 900 honorees were recognized during the three ceremonies this year.

UCF Alumni Launches Ever Upward Awards to Spotlight Fastest-Growing Knight Businesses Worldwide /news/ucf-alumni-launches-ever-upward-awards-to-spotlight-fastest-growing-knight-businesses-worldwide/ Thu, 29 Jan 2026 16:09:03 +0000 /news/?p=150658 The new annual awards program celebrates highly successful, Knight-owned or -led companies achieving exceptional growth and driving innovation.

]]>
Today 鶹Ʒ Ss fastest-growing Knight-led companies were once ideas formed in classrooms, tested in labs and sharpened during late-night conversations across UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss campuses. Now, those ideas are scaling fast.

To celebrate that rise, UCF Alumni has launched Ever Upward: Fastest-Growing Knight Businesses 鶹Ʒ S a new annual awards program honoring Knight-owned or -led companies demonstrating significant revenue growth, innovation and leadership.

Ever Upward is about more than recognition. It honors how far ideas can travel, and reminds the UCF community that ambition doesn 鶹Ʒ St end at graduation. For Knights in business, the direction has always been clear: ever upward.

“Ever Upward … shines a light on Knight-led businesses that are scaling with purpose.” 鶹Ʒ S Rodney Grabowski, senior vice president for advancement and partnerships at UCF

鶹Ʒ SOur alumni are building companies that are growing rapidly and making a real impact in their industries and communities, 鶹Ʒ S says Rodney Grabowski, UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss senior vice president for Advancement and Partnerships and CEO of the UCF Foundation. 鶹Ʒ SEver Upward recognizes success and the entrepreneurial drive behind it. This program shines a light on Knight-led businesses that are scaling with purpose. 鶹Ʒ S

Honorees will be recognized at a signature awards event on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, bringing together alumni entrepreneurs, university leadership and business leaders to celebrate remarkable achievements and share insights.

Inspired by UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss unwavering charge to reach higher, Ever Upward acknowledges businesses whose growth reflects perseverance and vision. Recognition is based solely on verified financial performance over a three-year period 鶹Ʒ S spotlighting companies that are truly rising.

Eligible businesses will be ranked by their cumulative percentage revenue growth across their 12-month reporting periods for 2022, 2023 and 2024. To ensure the highest levels of transparency and trust, all rankings will be independently tabulated, so recognition lands exactly where it 鶹Ʒ Ss earned.

Applications for the inaugural Ever Upward awards open Feb. 3 and close March 26.

Unlike traditional business awards that are driven by nominations or subjective criteria, Ever Upward is determined entirely by performance data. All financial information will be submitted directly to Carr, Riggs & Ingram 鶹Ʒ S the program 鶹Ʒ Ss official tabulation partner and a nationally ranked accounting and advisory firm 鶹Ʒ S ensuring confidentiality and independent verification throughout the process.

Applications for the inaugural Ever Upward awards will open Feb. 3. Eligible companies must have been in operation since at least January 2022, meet minimum revenue thresholds and be Knight-owned or led.

鶹Ʒ SOur alumni don 鶹Ʒ St just represent UCF, they extend it, 鶹Ʒ S says Michael Harding, UCF associate vice president for partnerships. 鶹Ʒ SEver Upward celebrates Knight-owned and Knight-led businesses whose leadership and momentum mirror the ambition of this university and uniquely position them to build powerful partnerships with UCF. 鶹Ʒ S

The application deadline is Thursday, March 26, 2026. Finalists will be announced in early summer, with full rankings revealed at the August awards celebration.

Knight Line Student-Run Calling Center Focuses on Caring /news/knight-line-student-run-calling-center-focuses-on-caring/ Tue, 21 Jul 2020 22:51:29 +0000 /news/?p=111220 Since the pandemic hit, UCF students who typically fundraise for the university through alumni outreach are now connecting with grads through “care calls.”

]]>
For more than a decade, UCF student fundraisers have called on alumni and parents from a lively call center housed just slightly off-campus in Research Park. Known as Knight Line, the center employs around 35 full-time UCF students each semester whose goal is to engage with donors and potential donors and provide an insider view on the great things that are happening at UCF. Their efforts have raised as much as $400,000 annually for student scholarships and vital programs at the university.

When the pandemic came calling, the on-site engagement center went remote. Getting new software to keep information secure and allow calling from personal computers was the easy part. But with training and feedback being crucial to the student fundraisers 鶹Ʒ S success, this new format presented some challenges.

As is typical of Knights, they rose to the challenge and have excelled.

鶹Ʒ S[We] had to change up how we interact during shifts, since we aren 鶹Ʒ St together in person; it 鶹Ʒ Ss more difficult to ask a question or provide feedback, 鶹Ʒ S says Alexander F. Pribil, engagement center manager at Ruffalo Noel Levitz (RNL), the organization that partners with The UCF Fund in managing call center operations.

Although COVID-19 has changed some of the logistics of student calling, the focus remains the same: staying in touch.

鶹Ʒ SOur goal is to let [alumni] know we still care about them, wanting to know how they 鶹Ʒ Sre doing after graduating and letting them know about things going on at UCF, 鶹Ʒ S says student supervisor Ilyssa Appleman, an event management major who has worked at Knight Line for two years.

Now, the student fundraisers focus on 鶹Ʒ Scare calling, 鶹Ʒ S rather than on raising funds for university students and programs. Since the pandemic hit, callers have made about 16,000 care calls.

鶹Ʒ SWhen we got started with our care calling, we spent some time working on active listening, and taking cues from our alumni, 鶹Ʒ S says Pribil. 鶹Ʒ SMost calls average around the three-minute mark but we have [had] some great conversations that went on for 25-30 minutes 鶹Ʒ S the callers were really connecting with our alumni. 鶹Ʒ S

Appleman agrees that everyone has adapted well off-site. She has found the transition to care calls very successful and says that most alumni seem to enjoy them.

鶹Ʒ SThey feel appreciated that we called to check in during these challenging times. A lot of them like to talk because they have been cooped up inside. 鶹Ʒ S

鶹Ʒ S[The alumni] feel appreciated that we called to check in during these challenging times. A lot of them like to talk because they have been cooped up inside. 鶹Ʒ S

The student fundraisers also work hard to stay connected to each other remotely. 鶹Ʒ SI believe that the callers have adapted to working off-site in a wonderful way, 鶹Ʒ S says Tahlia Hutchinson, a political science major who has worked at Knight Line for more than a year. 鶹Ʒ SWe run games in our chatroom during shifts and even just talk about our days and update each other on what 鶹Ʒ Ss going on. 鶹Ʒ S

But, regardless of the location 鶹Ʒ S on-site or off-site 鶹Ʒ S Knight Line makes an impact not only on the alumni who receive the calls, but also on the students who make the calls.

鶹Ʒ SThe friendships and connections I have made at the Knight Line will always hold a special place in my heart, 鶹Ʒ S says Appleman. 鶹Ʒ SI 鶹Ʒ Sve learned so much about the university while working here, and while it 鶹Ʒ Ss common to have a bad day at a job, I have never had a bad day here! 鶹Ʒ S

Hutchinson agrees. 鶹Ʒ SWorking at the UCF Knight Line has offered me many different opportunities, from internships to networking, 鶹Ʒ S she says. 鶹Ʒ SThe UCF Knight Line pays in more ways than one. 鶹Ʒ S

UCF Celebrates Planned Giving /news/ucf-celebrates-planned-giving/ Tue, 10 Apr 2018 20:48:38 +0000 /news/?p=81954 UCF celebrated Charles Millican Legacy Society members during opening night of UCF Celebrates the Arts on April 6.

More than 80 donors who have included the university in their estate plans were honored at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and thanked for their commitment by Jeff Moore, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and others.

Moore, who helped launch the UCF Celebrates the Arts festival four years ago, is also a member of the Millican Society. He and his wife established the Jeff and Mindy Moore Endowed Music Scholarship at UCF. 鶹Ʒ SMy legacy gift is scholarship, in an area about which I am extremely passionate 鶹Ʒ S music, and specifically percussion 鶹Ʒ S at a place in which I believe: UCF, 鶹Ʒ S he said.

Remembering the festival 鶹Ʒ Ss goal 鶹Ʒ S to extend the arts and make an impact on the community 鶹Ʒ S Moore expressed his appreciation for society donors who similarly 鶹Ʒ Sunderstand the importance of playing an active role in improving lives. 鶹Ʒ S

The Charles Millican Legacy Society is named in honor of UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss founding president. Two years ago, which would have been Millican 鶹Ʒ Ss 100th birthday year, a goal was set to add 100 new members by the end of the IGNITE fundraising campaign.

Planned gifts are an important part of IGNITE, a multi-year fundraising effort to raise $500 million for the university by mid-2019. They currently make up $62 million of the campaign 鶹Ʒ Ss $365 million attainment.

If you’d like to speak to someone about making a planned gift, please contact Kathleen Hagerty, at Kathleen.Hagerty@ucf.edu or call 407.882.1237.

President’s Appreciation Reception Honors High-Level Donors /news/par2017/ Fri, 17 Nov 2017 19:54:49 +0000 /news/?p=79606 Members of UCF 鶹Ʒ Ss Pegasus Society 鶹Ʒ S high-level donors to the university 鶹Ʒ S were honored Wednesday night at the annual President 鶹Ʒ Ss Appreciation Reception at the Morgridge International Reading Center. Society members are recognized for their lifetime giving levels of $1 million or more. Also recognized were generous donors who have given $25,000 or more in the past two years.

President John C. Hitt thanked donors for their support, which has helped the university grow its endowment and fund endowed professorships. Endowed positions are crucial for recruiting and retaining the highest-quality faculty. 鶹Ʒ SAs members of our Knights family, you have my deepest appreciation for your support in making UCF one of the great success stories in higher education, 鶹Ʒ S he said.

Lisa Dieker, Pegasus Professor and Lockheed Martin Eminent Scholar Chair, shared her experiences as a first-generation student who benefitted from scholarship support, and as an endowed professor whose funding has 鶹Ʒ Sgiven me as a faculty member the greatest gift of all: the time to think outside the box. 鶹Ʒ S Dieker demonstrated TeachLivE™, a program created by Dieker and colleagues at UCF, which uses interactive technology and avatars to improve teacher training.

In addition, Pamela Carroll, dean of the College of Education and Human Performance (COEHP) and Michael Morsberger, Vice President for Advancement, addressed the group. Student musician Aramis Ruiz provided musical entertainment, and College of Education and Human Performance Student Maurice McLeish spoke about his UCF experience.

Nursing Scholarship Recipients Express Gratitude to Donors /news/nursing_thanks/ Fri, 07 Apr 2017 13:17:38 +0000 /news/?p=76972 When Eliany Torrez Pon learned that her grandmother in Nicaragua had ovarian cancer, she and her family sent money to relatives in their home country to help. Pon contributed the $2,000 she had saved to pay for her spring semester tuition, knowing she would not able to pay for classes — as a DREAMer (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors), she does not qualify for financial aid.

Then the email arrived from the College of Nursing Scholarship Committee. At first she thought it was a hoax. Pon had been awarded the Vivian and Barry Woods Educational Endowment Scholarship. The amount of her award was $2,000. 鶹Ʒ SThere were many things in life trying to stop me from my dreams, almost convincing me that this life was not meant to be, 鶹Ʒ S she says. 鶹Ʒ SBut if receiving this scholarship when I did doesn 鶹Ʒ St tell me that I am meant to be where I am today, then I don 鶹Ʒ St know what will. 鶹Ʒ S Pon is on track to graduate in 2018 and thanks the donors who have given her the opportunity to 鶹Ʒ Ssave lives in the future, while making something of mine. 鶹Ʒ S

Pon was one of the 113 nursing students who received a private donor-funded scholarship this year, selected from more than 400 applicants. Students and their donors met at an annual scholarship luncheon this week to share stories about the power and impact of philanthropy.

One of those donors was Sarah Dodson 鶹Ʒ S01, who established the In Memory of Marlie Kai Dodson UCF Oncology Nursing Endowed Scholarship in 2012, in honor of her daughter who died in 2011. Many UCF nurses cared for Marlie during her stays at Arnold Palmer Hospital and inspired Dodson, who wanted to support future caregivers graduating from the UCF nursing program. Recently, Dodson experienced a déjà vu moment when her niece was hospitalized at the same hospital where Marlie spent so much of her life. 鶹Ʒ SI was a worried aunt, assuming the worst, 鶹Ʒ S she says.

As fate would have it, her niece 鶹Ʒ Ss nurse was Mackenzie Chase, 鶹Ʒ S16, the 2015 recipient of Marlie 鶹Ʒ Ss scholarship. 鶹Ʒ SIt was at that moment, I felt the impact of giving, 鶹Ʒ S says Dodson, who watched as Mackenzie confidently cared for her niece. 鶹Ʒ SI knew everything would be fine. 鶹Ʒ S

The College of Nursing awarded $332,000 in scholarship support this year 鶹Ʒ S the largest amount ever. Two new endowed scholarships were established this year: The Elaine Alliance Endowed Scholarship will support undergraduate nursing students and the Dr. Angeline and John R. Bushy Endowed Scholarship will support doctoral students interested in rural health.

鶹Ʒ SWe are very thankful for the support we receive from our alumni and friends in providing scholarships for our nursing students, 鶹Ʒ S said Mary Lou Sole, dean of the UCF College of Nursing. Sole also noted that six nursing faculty members had established endowed scholarships, and more than 2,000 faculty and staff members contributed to programs and funds campus-wide 鶹Ʒ S including many to benefit the College of Nursing — during the recent faculty and staff campaign.

Another student who benefited from a scholarship was Robin Kintz, whose path to nursing was a circuitous one. As a middle schooler, she was a caregiver to her breast cancer-battling mom and aunt, and was told she had a knack for the nursing profession. She resisted, and it wasn 鶹Ʒ St until later in life when she realized her calling. This semester, she started her first adult rotation — ironically, on the woman 鶹Ʒ Ss oncology unit at Florida Hospital. 鶹Ʒ SWhen I walked onto the unit, I looked at the patient 鶹Ʒ Ss names on the doors and two stuck out to me: my mom 鶹Ʒ Ss and my aunt 鶹Ʒ Ss, 鶹Ʒ S she says. 鶹Ʒ SI couldn 鶹Ʒ St help but think, I must be doing something right with this whole nursing thing. 鶹Ʒ S

Katie Korkosz, director for advancement at the college, says scholarships are a funding priority and assist students with their tuition and educational expenses. 鶹Ʒ SMany nursing students are not able to work during the program due to the rigorous curriculum, so scholarship support is critical and helps us recruit and retain the best and brightest students. 鶹Ʒ S

Kintz agrees that working while studying is hard. 鶹Ʒ SEntering nursing school last fall was a real challenge for me, 鶹Ʒ S she says. 鶹Ʒ SI was working 30 hours a week to pay my bills and was told that working during nursing school would be difficult. 鶹Ʒ S Luckily, Kintz received the Compassion for Nursing Endowed Scholarship which gave her the means to pay for tuition, and more. 鶹Ʒ SIt gave me peace of mind and the ability to focus more on my classwork. 鶹Ʒ S
