{"id":96788,"date":"2019-05-08T20:41:33","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T00:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=96788"},"modified":"2019-05-31T16:28:45","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T20:28:45","slug":"ucf-earns-shot-at-ncaa-womens-golf-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-earns-shot-at-ncaa-womens-golf-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"UCF Earns Shot At NCAA Women\u2019s Golf Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UCF women\u2019s golf team will have a chance to bring home the first NCAA team championship in school history this week thanks to the Knights\u2019 strong performance at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The Knights combined for a team score of 874 (10-over par) and thrived under pressure, shooting 8-under-par on the final nine holes of play May 8 to secure their place among the top six teams in the regional to advance to the finals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed oembed oembed-rich d-flex flex-column align-items-center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No caption needed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ChargeOn?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ChargeOn<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MwDS1bIOV3\">pic.twitter.com\/MwDS1bIOV3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; UCF Men&#39;s Golf (@UCF_MGolf) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UCF_MGolf\/status\/1126271371951190017?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Elizabeth Moon, junior all-conference honoree Maria Balcazar, sophomores Ana Laura Collado and Chinatsu Kobayashi and freshman Alyssa Lamoureux represented UCF at the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Collado tied for the second-best individual score over the three-day regional competition (206, 10-under par) among a field of 96 golfers.\u00a0Balcazar birdied the 18th\u00a0hole on the final day to boost the team above the cut.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The grit our team showed on that back 9 today was unbelievable. We kept telling them all week to believe, just believe,&#8221; UCF head coach Emily Marron says. &#8220;Ana Laura really was amazing and so steady for us. Her 66 in the first round put us in great position. It was a total team effort in the end, and I couldn&#8217;t be more proud of our team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We kept telling them all week to believe, just believe.&#8221; \u2014 UCF head coach Emily Marron<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>UCF was tabbed as a 13-seed in its at-large bid to the postseason after finishing second at the American Athletic Conference Championship. This year marks the program\u2019s 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0postseason appearance and the fifth during Marron\u2019s seven-year tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the top six at the\u00a0Cle Elum Regional were Southern Cal (844, 20-under); Washington (859, 5-under); Northwestern (864, par); Arkansas (869, 5-over); and San Jose State (872, 8-over). UCF finished ahead of Power 5 teams such as Ohio State, Oregon, South Carolina and Miami.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s golf team has advanced to the championship final once before in program history in the 1996 season.<\/p>\n<p>While a handful of Knights have won a national championship, none of the team titles have been achieved in an NCAA sanctioned championship competition.<\/p>\n<li>Football: 2017 national champions (Colley Matrix Poll)<\/li>\n<li>Aurieyall Scott (track &amp; field): UCF\u2019s only NCAA champion of any sport. She won the 60-meter dash at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships<\/li>\n<li>Cheerleading: Universal Cheerleaders Association National Champions (2003, 2007)<\/li>\n<li>Volleyball: Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (1978)<\/li>\n<p>The 2019 NCAA Women\u2019s Golf National Championship will be at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas, May 17-22 .
