00:08
hello my name is Renee Montgomery and I
00:12
am an online success coach for the UCF
00:14
online connect Center I’m joined today
00:17
by UCF online student John and we’re
00:20
gonna dive into a bit of discussion
00:22
about what it’s like to be a UCF online
00:24
night let’s go ahead and get started so
00:28
John tell me a little bit about yourself
00:30
yes I currently live in Cincinnati Ohio
00:33
and were cats in st. charles hospital
00:35
and i recently completed my master’s of
00:39
research administration degree in
00:41
December of 2019 and enjoying the
00:45
finishing it up and going with my career
00:50
wonderful thank you so much so a little
00:54
bit about you know looking at grad
00:57
school what in particular
00:59
drove you to want to enroll in a
01:01
graduate program yes I had completed my
01:05
bachelor’s degree in 1998 and during
01:08
that time I was waiting to get my
01:10
master’s degree but there were no other
01:12
programs that were in my fields of work
01:16
until recently back in 2014 of 2015 I
01:20
saw a brochure from UCF it was an all I
01:22
think online brochure that I talked
01:25
about the Masters of research
01:26
administration and I thought that’s
01:28
something I’m currently doing at work
01:31
and then something I wanted to kind of
01:33
pursue so during that time I kind of
01:38
want to do some thinking and talk to my
01:40
family about and my wife was finishing
01:43
up her doctorate degree in music so once
01:45
she got done I was gonna jump in and
01:47
start pursuing my master’s degree so
01:50
once she got finished in the fall
01:52
actually followed 2016 I started the
01:55
process of getting my paperwork
01:57
I contacted UCF to get some information
01:59
and started putting my application in to
02:04
start in fall 2017 so it was it was
02:08
something I finally saw that I can get a
02:10
master’s degree with something I’m doing
02:12
in my career
02:15
so a follow-up to that John was there
02:18
anything in particular that made you
02:20
choose online learning as your preferred
02:23
method to complete your degree yes maybe
02:27
in a husband and father and working
02:31
full-time I just did not have time to do
02:33
in class in class after work and so what
02:39
I had to do is you know I’ve taken
02:40
online classes before and I thought this
02:42
would be the easiest way plus UCF to
02:45
Orlando to since noise a little bit
02:47
difficult to try to travel that far each
02:50
day so but I knew that this was an
02:52
online program it would be it would fit
02:54
with what I do and so it was a perfect
02:57
perfect scenario that’s awesome so being
03:03
a UC former UCF online student do you
03:05
have any tips that you’d want to give to
03:08
anyone who wants to be an an online
03:11
student or learn online yes if you’ve
03:13
taken on online classes before this
03:17
shouldn’t be any any more difficult or
03:19
actually should be easy for you to to go
03:22
through but if you’re a student that’s
03:24
done in class work and have never taken
03:27
online courses it’s a little different I
03:30
mean you’re gonna have you’re not going
03:32
to have as much communication with your
03:34
faculty as you did in class and making
03:38
friends is a little more difficult
03:39
because when you’re in class you meet
03:41
other people you get to know who they
03:43
are or online most of time you they’re
03:46
people all over the country so it’s a
03:49
little difficult to to do that but with
03:53
academics the way they are in the way
03:55
the life is today I think online is one
03:58
of the best ways to get through to get a
04:00
degree and whether it’s a bachelor’s
04:02
degree or masters or PhD degree I think
04:04
it’s something that’s a very good
04:06
alternate instead of in-class work
04:10
that’s awesome feedback on that John so
04:14
with an online student and that being
04:16
your preferred method to learn for the
04:19
master research administration program
04:21
did you have a favorite part of being
04:25
specifically a UCF online student
04:28
okay word my favorite I mean they they
04:33
were wonderful they worked with me if I
04:35
had any questions they got back to me
04:36
quickly and I especially dr. Mike Jones
04:42
was fabulous I mean I love her to death
04:45
and she really helped me through this as
04:48
well I mean not only she’s the director
04:50
of the program she’s also a faculty and
04:53
teaching several the classes and so I
04:54
give her a lot of props and I think
04:57
you’re hurt you know I was gonna make
04:59
sure I thanked her and I whenever I’ve
05:01
communicated with her just to let her
05:03
know that she helped me a lot awesome
05:07
yes she’s very wonderful absolutely so
05:11
as far as your experience specifically
05:13
kind of shifting from the online focused
05:16
more of the coaching focus what were
05:19
your initial thoughts on coaching and
05:21
having a success coach with your online
05:23
program I think it’s absolutely
05:25
essential to have one I think you as a
05:28
coach helped me so much in preparation
05:31
for getting through the program sitting
05:34
in my courses and without you I would
05:37
probably be still sitting figuring out
05:39
what I’m supposed to do so it’s it’s I
05:43
think for any university that’s doing
05:46
online coursework I think it’s essential
05:48
to have success coach or some sort of
05:51
counselor type person that communicates
05:54
with the students so that way it makes
05:56
the transition easier to go through the
05:59
online course through the program and to
06:02
graduate so I think it’s very yeah it’s
06:04
wonderful thank you for that now did you
06:09
notice if anything shifted for you or
06:12
how things may have changed throughout
06:13
your time with your program with your
06:15
coach I thought my coach did great from
06:20
the start to the end I never had any
06:22
issues with with what you did and
06:25
helping me out so I commend you and
06:28
thank you personally and you know for
06:31
anyone that is going through the online
06:33
program you know rely on your coach
06:36
she’s there to help she or he is there
06:38
to help you and so just ask questions
06:41
ask for help
06:42
if you need it thank you so much so to
06:46
wrap up then John do you have any advice
06:49
for students wanting to apply to UCF
06:53
online as a potential grad student yeah
06:56
I would say contact UCF the school or
07:01
program that you wanting to get into ask
07:03
questions get all the information you
07:05
want to take some time to think about it
07:07
before you just rushing in so you know
07:09
exactly what you’re getting into so
07:11
because I think some students think okay
07:14
this is what I’m going to do I’m gonna
07:15
go in I’m going to do it and find out
07:17
it’s the wrong program so I think by
07:20
doing so taking a little time and then
07:23
once you know that’s the right program
07:25
for you and you get to know the people
07:28
that’s at that school and the program
07:30
then apply get your paperwork in and
07:34
rely on them because they’re gonna be
07:36
there to help you out so wonderful it’s
07:39
excellent advice thank you so much John
07:42
again for taking out some time today in
07:45
your busy work schedule and life
07:47
schedule to speak with me a little bit
07:49
and reflect on your experience at UCF
07:51
and with coaching in general and I hope
07:56
you have a wonderful rest of your day
07:59
thank you you too thank you
